NEXTGEN CONNECT VIRTUAL EDITION: REALITIES OF BEING A NEXTGEN LEADER.

The Family Business Hub successfully concluded our first virtual NextGen Connect event on February 11th. The event’s central theme, “𝐫𝐞𝐚π₯𝐒𝐭𝐒𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 π›πžπ’π§π  𝐚 ππžπ±ππ†πžπ§ π₯𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫 ” was aimed to provide insights and discussions on the Journey, opportunities and challenges faced by the next generation leaders within family businesses.

The NextGen Connect event commenced with a captivating presentation by Mary Asante Asamoah, who clearly defined the characteristics of a NextGen leader. The presentation outlined five key stages of a NextGen’s journey: observer, apprentice, disruptor, successor, and legacy shaper. It also addressed the common misconceptions surrounding NextGen leaders, often perceived as having everything handed to them. The session explored the high expectations placed on these leaders by family members, colleagues, and those observing from a distance.

Our keynote speaker, Ashish L. Gokaldas delivered an open, honest and inspiring message, and emphasized that each NextGen leader is in essence, the C.E.O of their own work. The speaker urged attendees to “own it,” actively seek training and development opportunities, and cultivate strong networking skills. The goal is to foster personal and professional growth, which will, in turn, contribute to the growth and development of family businesses.

One of the key lessons highlighted was that the journey of a NextGen leader inevitably includes navigating pressure, comparison, and the responsibility of honoring the founder’s legacy. These elements, though challenging, are integral to the experience. The event emphasized the importance of recognizing these aspects as natural parts of the leadership journey.

During the session, one deeply moving point was the discussion around emotions. Our guest speaker acknowledged that while business curricula often overlook this aspect, emotions are a fundamental part of the NextGen experience. The session encouraged attendees to embrace their emotions as they learn to lead.

The NextGen Connect event served as a reminder that the path to leadership is paved with both opportunities and challenges. By embracing these lessons and applying them in their respective roles, NextGen leaders can confidently navigate their unique journeys and contribute to the enduring success of their family businesses.

To our NextGen leaders, the journey continues; more impact awaits. We will deliver even more valuable insights and connections to empower your leadership journey.
