In family businesses, we often spend our time discussing succession plans, asset management, and growth strategies. However, a recent realization has shifted our focus entirely toward the people behind the business and their wellbeing, leading to our theme: “Carrying a Legacy Without Losing Yourself” with a focus on mental health and general wellbeing.

The NextGen Connect session, created for the next generation of family business leaders, was hosted by Mary Asante-Asamoah.

Ms. Ida Agyekum, a mental wellbeing consultant, coach, and mentor, opened the session by reminding us that the most important investment we can make is in ourselves. Her presentation focused on the need to make time for self-reflection and to understand our trauma responses. She highlighted how our core identities shape every decision we make, in and out of the boardroom. The most profound moment came when she addressed the stagnation many leaders feel, noting, “Sometimes we keep wondering why we are not improving; it’s because we are not healing.” She emphasized that true growth is impossible if we are carrying the weight of unaddressed past wounds, concluding that healing is not a luxury, but a necessity for leadership.

Following the deep dive into the mind, Dr. Razak Rahman, a medical doctor and fitness and metabolic health creator, shifted the focus to the physical body. Bringing a technical yet vital perspective, Dr. Razak explored how our daily habits dictate our long-term health outcomes. He placed strong emphasis on stress management, explaining that stress is not just a feeling but a biological trigger that can lead to insulin resistance, cardiovascular disease, and chronic inflammation.

Dr. Razak also shed light on the physiological shifts many leaders face but rarely discuss menopause and andropause. He explained how these transitions affect our bodies and how our psychological reactions to them can impact our performance. He further warned of silent health dangers, such as excess fat stored in the lower body, which can contribute to high blood pressure and an increased risk of certain cancers. His session was a clear reminder that our bodies are the engines of our legacy and neglecting them is a risk no leader can afford to take.

Through these two powerful sessions, one truth remained clear: to lead a legacy, you must first lead yourself by honoring both your mind and your body.

To our NextGen leaders: remember that your mental health and wellbeing are the foundation of your leadership. Prioritize your healing and your health as much as the legacy you have been entrusted with.

Our next session will be in November. We look forward to seeing you there.
